Funded by the Horizon Europe programme, MOMENTUM aims to better understand the mechanisms connecting CKD with cognitive decline and to develop new approaches for its early diagnosis and potential treatment.
CKD affects around 750 million people worldwide and more than 80 million in Europe. Despite its significant impact, cognitive decline associated with CKD remains underdiagnosed and insufficiently studied. MOMENTUM seeks to address this gap through a multidisciplinary research programme combining clinical studies, experimental models and translational research.
Led by Biogem and the Mario Negri Institute in Italy, the four-year project brings together experts and organisations from ten European countries, including research institutions, universities, healthcare organisations and patient representatives. The EKPF will contribute the patient perspective, helping ensure that the research responds to the experiences and needs of people living with kidney disease by developing active and in-depth tools and questionnaires to measure the specific quality of life challenges and perceived experience specific for MCI-CKD.
Launched on 1 June 2026, MOMENTUM will work towards improving the early identification of cognitive impairment and exploring targeted interventions that could benefit patients, their families and healthcare systems.
