Organ Donation and Transplantation Worldwide: The Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation 2024 Report

Global organ donation and transplantation continue to grow, but inequalities remain

A new analysis published in Transplantation shows that global organ donation and transplantation activity continues to increase, with more than 173,000 transplants performed worldwide in 2024 across 92 countries.

The study reports an approximate 2% increase compared to the previous year, driven mainly by the rise in deceased donation and the expansion of donation after circulatory death, which now represents a growing share of global transplant activity.

Despite this progress, demand still far exceeds supply, leaving thousands of patients on waiting lists worldwide.

The report also highlights significant geographical disparities in access to transplantation, with major differences between countries depending on healthcare systems, resources, and organisational frameworks.

Experts emphasise the need to strengthen donation policies, improve equity in access, and enhance international cooperation to ensure that more patients can benefit from this life-saving treatment.
