Rare Kidney Diseases take centre stage at Euronews Health Summit

Rare kidney diseases (RKDs) were highlighted as a growing European public health priority during a dedicated session at the Euronews Health Summit 2026, where the European Kidney Patients’ Federation (EKPF) was represented by its President, Daniel Gallego.

The discussion marked a clear shift in how RKDs are perceived, positioning them as a systemic challenge rather than a niche condition. Speakers emphasised that delayed diagnosis should not be seen as inevitable, but as a failure of health systems to implement existing tools and knowledge, including simple screening methods such as urine testing.

The session also underlined the significant socio-economic impact on patients and caregivers, including disruptions to work, education, and family life, as well as the long-term burden associated with late-stage interventions such as dialysis and transplantation.

The Rare Kidney Diseases Barometer was presented as a key policy tool to drive change, with Euronews helping to amplify its visibility beyond the rare disease community and into broader policy and media discussions. You can acces the Rare Kidney Diseases Barometer HERE.
