EKPF welcomes a historic step for kidney health. On 15 December 2025, world leaders adopted a new UN Political Declaration on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health, which explicitly recognises kidney disease as part of the global NCD agenda for the first time.
This milestone acknowledges what patients and clinicians have long known: chronic kidney disease is a major driver of morbidity, mortality and health system burden worldwide, yet has often been overlooked in global health policy.
The declaration follows another landmark achievement earlier in 2025: the adoption of the WHO Kidney Health Resolution. Together, these developments firmly place kidney health on the international agenda.
However, global commitments must translate into real action. Governments now need to prioritise prevention, early screening and diagnosis, and ensure timely, affordable treatment — before progression to kidney failure.
Kidney disease is largely preventable and treatable when identified early, yet millions of people worldwide lack access to basic screening and primary care services. Without deliberate national action, the opportunity created here risks being lost.
